The mammography tech is your ally
7/20/2010 10:55:06 PM

You know those days, you are run off your feet and yet another breast ultrasound appears on your schedule - a “fit in” post diagnostic mammogram - the patient is from out of town. You may be tempted to rush the patient into the ultrasound room after a brief glance at the screening report - but isn’t there a fellow staff member you should consult with first? An imaging ally.

What measures can you take to ensure the most efficient and beneficial use of your time - and when it comes to breast ultrasound, are we doing enough?

Patient expectations

Our profession is briefly showcased in a new iPhone 4.0 "Facetime" advertisement!
Yes, the latest iPhone cellphone allows video calls. Here we see a military dad (presumably on duty in some far off place) able to "share the moment".
At times the mum focusses the phone camera toward the ultrasound monitor.

No ultrasound grads in BC until Nov 2012
5/20/2010 4:07:26 PM
The September 2010 BCIT Sonography program selected  24 individuals from over 200 applicants and the new program has been extended to 27 months! This means that staff shortages around BC may not be alleviated till the end of 2012!!

Course entry has been opened to high school graduates - according to the information posted on the BCIT website:
  • only 10 applicants have completed a post secondary credential
  • only 8 applicants have health related experiences such as medical office assistants, pharmacy technicians or paramedics
  • other applicants had only "volunteer" based health related experiences
Nevertheless - end 2012 seems like a very long time away. In my own three room hospital department I have one colleague retiring within a month and her replacement is within 3-5 years of retirement.
What does your department look like - can it tolerate imminent shortages?
